The heavens are telling the glory of God;
and the firmament proclaims his handiwork.
Day to day pours forth speech,
and night to night declares knowledge.
There is no speech, nor are there words;
their voice is not heard;
yet their voice goes out through all the earth,
and their words to the end of the world. ~Psalm 19: 1-4
Yesterday marked the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day. It is the world’s largest environmental movement to drive transformative change for people and planet. This year’s theme of “climate action” was hoped to be more than just a day but a historic moment to call people and governments to greater action. Whether we support Earth Day or its goals as an organization, we can be reminded of our call as Christians to care for all God created for our use. The heavens declare the wonders of the firmament of God’s creation. It is good, it is marvelous.
Be it a walk outside, a run, skiing, hiking, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, water skiing, swimming, or the myriad of other outdoor activities, or just sitting on our deck as we have our morning coffee, we enjoy creation. And now, as the days lengthen and the air smells sweet, many are looking forward to planting gardens, or flower beds, and to get outside to just enjoy creation even more. We need that nature therapy as our limited social contact continues.
As we begin to spend more time outdoors, we might want to consider God’s call to care for creation. What are you doing to care for your small part of creation? In your own yard or in your neighbourhood? How do you conserve the resources in your home to cut down on waste and pollution, or have you even thought about it?
If we are not sure what do to, the Earth Day website has a wonderful list of ideas for us to consider. Even small changes can make a big impact on our carbon footprint and in this way, we are doing our small part to honour creation and especially honour the Creator, our God, who provides this marvelous planet we call home.

God of resurrection, we give You thanks and praise for all You have created. We thank You for land: mountains, plains, valleys. We thank you for ecosystems: bogs, forests, jungles, deserts. We thank you for water: seas, oceans, rivers, and streams. We thank you air, for rain and clouds, for the sky at sunset. We thank for animals and every living creature. Help us to be wise in our use of all that You have made. Help us to protect the creation so that all creatures may thrive and the sustainability of the planet be secure. Guide us in our use and care of the earth’s resources, so that so that all we do and all we are may glorify You and honour You, O God, for we ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
